Week beginning 1st March

Reading

For the week:

Look at the follow up activities at the end of the guided reading questions for Who Let the Gods Out?. Each day, choose one of the activities to complete from each row (across).  Once you have completed the activity colour in the box.  

Writing

This week you will be writing a non-chronological report about one of the planets in our solar system. 

Monday: Work through the Lesson Powerpoint. (AR will not be available).

Tuesday: Read through the fact cards (2 sets) and then complete the fact cards quiz.  

Wednesday: Research one planet from our solar system. Find out at least 10 interesting facts about the planet. Useful websites can be found in the Topic section.

Thursday: Use the non-chronological report plan to plan out your writing. 

Friday: read through the checklist and your plan to help you write your non-chronological report. Think carefully about making your writing interesting - do not just list facts. Don't forget to use the best vocabulary, vary your sentence structures and use accurate punctuation.

  • Work through Earth and Space Slide 5.
  • Cut out fact cards 5A (Work 5) and sort into the correct catergories on worksheet 5A

Task 3: 

  • Work through Earth and Space Slide 6.
  • Choose one of the planets to research - make sure this is different than your English work. 
  • Cut out the planet template and then templates 6B (2) and 6C to create a planet flip book.

Over the next few weeks, we will be writing non-chronological reports about Earth and Space.

Monday: Complete slides 1 - 8 of the Powerpoint presentation - Lesson Presentation writing reports.

Tuesday: Read through the Voyager information sheet and find at least 6 more interesting facts on the NASA website: Voyager 1 and 2: The Interstellar Mission | NASA Space Place – NASA Science for Kids 

Wednesday: Complete slides 9 -10 of the powerpoint presentation and use the 2star activity sheet non-chronological report to plan your report. 

Thursday: Write your report. Use your plan and the non-chronological report checklist to help you.

Friday: Complete the report checklist and edit and improve your work. Make sure that it all makes sense; check for spelling mistakes and make sure that all your punctuation is accurate.

  • Complete worksheet 2B from Earth and Space Work 1.
  • Make the moving model from Template 2A - use matchsticks or cocktail sticks. (Earth and Space Work 1).
  • Use the Fact cards 2A (Earth and Space Work 1) to complete the plenary from the slide show. 

Task 2:

  • Work through Earth and Space Slide 2.

  • NB: this investigation needs a fairly sunny day and to be set up in the morning. Conduct the sundial investigation from Earth and Space Work 2, using the sundial sheet 2A and then record your observations using worksheet 2B.

Task 3: 

  • Work through Earth and Space Slide 3.
  • Cut out the Season Labels 3B from Earth and Space Work 3 and complete worksheet 3A. NB: there are 2 copies of the labels so you only need half the sheet.

This week we will be writing our own myths. You will be asked to complete an activity and then write a paragraph of your myth. Each activity will help you to build your writing skills and you should try to apply these when writing your paragraphs.

Monday:

  • Watch the video clip of a warrior exploring Ancient Athens. Think about the setting for your myth. 
  • Watch the clip for a second time and complete a senses chart. Make a note of all the things the warrior can see, hear, feel, smell and taste.
  • Read the fisrt 3 paragraphs of the myth WAGOLL (what a good one looks like) and highlight any sentences that describe the senses.

Tuesday

  • Re-read the first 3 chapters of the myth WAGOLL.
  • Play the Sentence Openers dice game - think about what might fit in with your myth. 
  • Remind yourself of your plan and write the opening for your myth (1 or 2 paragraphs). Remember to describe the setting using the senses and vary your sentence openers. 
  • Check your work for: sense, spelling, punctuation and using the best vocabulary. 

Wednesday

  • Complete the expanded noun phrases activity.
  • Check through Writing Speech to remind yourself about speech punctuation.
  • Read paragraphs 4 & 5 of the myth WAGOLL.
  • Using your plan and the myth WAGOLL, write the build-up for your myth (1 or 2 paragraphs). Remember to include a conversation but don't use too much speech. 
  • Check your work!

Thursday:

  • Read through chapters 6, 7 &  8 of the myth WAGOLL. Highlight any sentences that you think show action. 
  • Complete the Synonyms activity.
  • Using your plan and the myth WAGOLL, write the problem (action scene - 1 or 2 paragraphs) of your myth. 
  • Check your work. 

Friday:  

  • Re-read the myth WAGOLL.
  • Using your plan and the WAGOLL, write your resolution and ending (1 - 3 paragraphs).
  • Re-read your whole myth and check through your work.
  • Photograph your myth and send me a copy. I really want to read them!

Wednesday: You are going to start planning your own Greek myth. Think about all the mythical creatures from the myths that we have read, watched or listened to. Now design your own mythical creature for your myth. Include as much detail as possible, colour in your design and answer the questions.

Thursday: Today you are going to think about your hero or heroine. Draw a detailed picture of your hero or heroine and answer the questions to help you with your own myth.

Friday: Plan your myth in detail. Complete the myth storyboard by coloring detailed pictures of the main events of your myth in each box and then writing a sentence or two to briefly describe the events.

Task 2: Read through the Powerpoint – Who did the Ancient Greeks worship? Then, complete the Gods and Goddesses cards. Cut out the pictures and match them to the correct card and then fill in the relevant details about the Gods and Goddesses. Once you have completed the cards, create a Top Trumps game by giving each God or Goddess a score based on how important or powerful you think they are.   

Task 3: Read through the Powerpoint – The Theatre. Complete the quiz at the end of the Powerpoint using the Theatre question sheet and then complete the Ancient Greek Mask Activity sheet.

Thursday: Choose one of the myths that we have looked at this week and draw a storyboard. Choose    6 - 8  main points of the myth and draw a detailed picture for each and then write a sentence to explain each picture. 

Friday: Watch the myths of Pandora's Box and Arachne the Weaver. Then, write a paragraph to describe the difference between these myths and the hero myths that we studied at the beginning of the week. Think about the morals of each myth, if there is a warning in the myth, who is involved in the myths, how the myth might effect mortals or if something came into being as a result of the myth.
